MUMBAI: Finally, Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha did it!
The fabled Bollywood lovers of the 1970s and early 1980s, who have not acknowledged each other since their last film Silsila together in 1981, greeted each other for the first time in 33 years at the the Screen Awards here on Tuesday – January 14.
The two former lovers said namaste to each other and exchanged a smile. Jaya Bachchan, who accompanied her husband, also greeted Rekha and shook her hand.
The Big B and Rekha, who have never been seen together since 1981, were photographed together on a flight to Chennai last year for a cinema function.
Their love affair began during the shooting of Do Anjane in 1976 even though Amitabh was already married to Jaya for three years.
The love affair blossomed during the shooting of Alaap in 1977 when Amitabh reportedly used to meet Rekha secretly at her friend’s bungalow.
Their intimacy kept growing and the two started spending lots of time together as they went on to work together in as many as 18 films, including Kasme Vaade, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Ram Balram, Khoon Pasina, Imaan Dharam, Ganga Ki Saugand, Mr Natwarlal, Suhaag, Chashme Buddoor, etc.
Jaya Bachchan was enraged but she told Amitabh that she won’t leave him and let him marry Rekha.
Interestingly, Amitabh, Jaya and Rekha were cast by Yash Chopra in Silsila in 1981 – a film about a love triangle.
That was the last time Amitabh and Rekha were seen together on screen and in real life.
