NEW DELHI: Two former Indian royal families are coming together through a marriage.

Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh’s daughter Aprajita Singh is set to marry Angad Singh who is the grandson of former Punjab chief minister and Patiala maharaja Captain Amarinder Singh. The two got engaged in Delhi recently.

Like Amarinder Singh, Virbhadra Singh is also the scion of the erstwhile Rampur Bushair princely state in Himachal Pradesh where Amarinder Singh still maintains two ancestral properties – at Kandyali and Dochi near Chail.

Both Angad and Aprajita know each other from Lawrence School Sanawar where Angad Singh was a year senior to her.

The 27-year-old Angad Singh, who is the son of Amarinder’s daughter Jai Inder Kaur, is currently doing his MBA from Cambridge while Aprajita Singh is also doing a course in designing in Britain. Angad Singh’s father is a Delhi-based businessman Gurpal Singh.

It must be mentioned that former diplomat and foreign minister Natwar Singh, who is from the Bharatpur royal family, is the brother-in-law of  Capt Amarinder Singh. Another sister of Amarinder Singh is married to former diplomat and governor Romesh Bhandari.

And Capt Amarinder Singh’s wife and the wife of hardline Akali leader Simranjeet Singh Mann are sisters.

Goes to show how former Indian royal families will go to any lengths to keep their ties intact even in these times of modernity.
