CHANDIGARH: Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu, 37, who was the main accused in the 2021 Republic Day violence at Red Ford during the farmers rally in Delhi, has died in a road accident.
Sidhu died when the white Mahindra Scorpio SUV he was travelling in, smashed into the back of a truck trailer on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway at about 8.30 pm on Tuesday.
The accident took place near Pipli toll plaza in the Kharkhhoda area of Sonepat district in Haryana.
He was reportedly brought dead to Sonepat Civil Hospital.
Sidhu, who was on bail, was reportedly travelling to Bhatinda from Delhi.
The actor was arrested in February last year for the Red Ford violence when a group of people had installed the Sikh religious flag of Nishan Sahib there. He was granted bail in April last year.
Condoling his death, Punjab chief minister Charanjit Channi tweeted, “Deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate demise of renowned actor and social activist, Deep Sidhu. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family and fans.”
Sidhu, whose family belonged to Udekaran village in Muktsar district, appeared in about half a dozen Punjabi films in his career.
