Hollywood actress Natalie Portman recalls her association with Irrfan while filming New York I love You

BOLLYWOOD: Messages of condolences are pouring in thick and fast for India’s most international film star Irrfan Khan who passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday at the age of 53.

Irrfan, who starred in the Oscar-sweeping Slumdog Millionaire, got glowing tributes from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences which gives the Oscar awards.

“A mainstay of Bollywood cinema and incredible talent in films like Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi and The Namesake, Irrfan Khan left his imprint on global cinema. An inspiration to millions, he will be greatly missed,” the Academy said in a tweet.

Remembering the versatile actor, Golden Globes said, “Sad news: Actor IRRFAN KHAN passed away yesterday at the age of 53 in Mumbai, India. He had been hospitalized the day before with a colon infection. Irrfan Khan was best known to international audiences for his roles in films like Life of Pi, The Lunchbox, Puzzle, Jurassic World and the Golden Globe® winning Slumdog Millionaire. He first appeared on the big screen in the Golden Globe® nominated film Salaam Bombay. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time. May he rest in peace.”

Hollywood actresses Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman, who worked with Irrfan Khan, also paid their tributes to the actor.

Natalie, who worked with Irrfan in Mira Nair’s New York I Love You, said in her condolence message on Instagram, “Sending love to Irrfan Khan’s loved ones today.”

Angelina Jolie, who also worked with Irrfan in the 2007 movie A Mighty Heart – on Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl who was killed by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002 – told IANS, “He stood out for his generosity as an artist, which made it a pleasure to work in any scene with him. I remember the intensity of his commitment, and equally his smile. I send my condolences and my sympathy to his family, his friends, and all admirers of his work, in India and around the world.”
