2 girl students from Punjab die in train collision near Brampton

BRAMPTON: In a heart-breaking news for the Indo-Canadian community, two Brampton girl students from Punjab died when the car in which they were travelling collided with a freight train near Tottenham in Simcoe County near here on Thursday night.

While one girl died at the scene, the other succumbed her injuries in hospital.

One of the victims has been identified as Jashanpreet Kaur, 19, who came to Canada from Raniwala village in Muktsar district on a study visa just recently.

Jashanpreet’s father Rajwinder Singh, who is a driver with Chandigarh Transport Undertaking, told the Tribune newspaper on hearing about his daughter’s death, “She was my only child. She talked to her mother on the phone on Saturday night. I appeal to the Indian and Canadian governments to help us bring her body back.”

Jashanpreet’s cousin Palampreet Kaur, 21, is among those injured.

Another girl who died in the mishap belonged to Faridkot district of Punjab.

There were five people from Brampton in the car when the mishap happened. The three others – the driver and two other women – were rushed to a Toronto trauma centre with serious injuries.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) unit at Nottawasaga tweeted to confirm the two deaths.

According to OPP, the collision took place at the 5th Line crossing at 11pm. “1 confirmed deceased & 3 others with serious injuries transported to a trauma centre in Toronto.”

Later, police confirmed the death of the second girl, tweeting, “A second person has succumbed to their injuries as a result of a passenger vehicle and train collision in New Tecumseth last night. Two others remain in hospital with serious injuries.”

The line crossing where the collision took place has signal lights but no gate to stop traffic. The collision took place when the girls were going to work for night shift at an auto spare-parts factory. The car belonged to the factory.
