TORONTO: Indo-Canadian driver Amarpreet Singh Sandhu has been arrested and charged with smuggling a historic record 228.14 kg of methamphetamine (crystal meth) into Canada from the US in his semi-truck.
This is the biggest-ever drug haul seized on record on the Canada-US border. The previous record was of approximately 200 kg methamphetamine seized on December 24, 2019, at the Ambassador Bridge port of entry in Windsor in Ontario.
Methamphetaminea is a powerful synthetic stimulant which is very addictive.
Amarpreet Singh Sandhu, 38, from Calgary was caught smuggling the methamphetamine in his semi-truck at the Coutts, Alberta port of entry.
On suspicion, officers of the Canada Border Security Agency (CBSA) referred Sandhu’s semi-truck for further inspection.
When the officers examined the shipment in his semi-truck, they uncovered 228.14 kg of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $28.5 million. This amount of methamphetamine translates into 2.28 million individual dosages.
Sandhu was arrested and handed over to Alberta RCMP.
After a long and thorough investigation, the RCMP Integrated Border Enforcement Team this week charged Sandhu with:
• Importing a controlled substance.
• Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
The record seizure was made on December 25.
Sandhu will appear in court on February 11 at the Lethbridge Provincial Courthouse in Calgary.
