NEW DELHI: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his greetings on the 548th birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak walked 28,000 km on foot in his life to spread the message of God.
Born in Nankana Sahib in today’s Pakistan in 1469, Guru Nanak travelled as far as Baghdad, Mecca, Turkey, Tashkent, Nepal, Assam and Sri Lanka on his spiritual missions. He completed these missions during four travel periods in his life. These periods are described as udasis.
Paying respects to the Sikh founder, the Prime Minister tweeted, “On Guru Nanak Jayanti we bow to the venerable Sri Guru Nanak Devji and recall his noble thoughts.”
American President Donald Trump also greeted the Sikhs on the birthday of Guru Nanak.
“Today, President Donald Trump sends warm wishes to Sikh Americans and Sikhs around the world as they celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji, the founder and first guru of Sikhism,” Trump’s secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement:
“The Sikh community today exemplifies the fundamental values that all Americans share: peace, tolerance, compassion, and service.
“President Trump also recognises the many contributions Sikh Americans have made to our great nation for more than 100 years, including through military and public service.”
