NEW DELHI: Here are the five Indian sex scandals involving celebrities and famous people that shocked people in recent years.
1: SUBHASH KAPOOR: One of the most famous Indian sex scandals came out in Feb 2014. Bollywood film director Subhash Kapoor, who has directed films such as Jolly LLB and Phas Gaye Re Obama, was slapped in front of his wife by actress Geetika Tyagi for sexual molestation. Geetika said the director forced himself upon and then chased her at her place in May 2012 when the two were alone after a party. Kapoor was arrested.
2: TARUN TEJPAL: Tehelka founder-editor and celebrated novelist Tarun Tejpal was arrested in Nov 2013 after a woman journalist working for him alleged sexual molestation in a hotel in Goa where the magazine was holding its annual `Think Fest’ from Nov 8-10. The `Think fest’ was attended by Hollywood actor Robert de Niro and Nobel laureate V.S. Naipaul and others.
The woman journalist alleged she was molested by Tarun Tejpal in the elevator of the hotel as both of them returned after saying goodnight to Robert de Niro and his daughter. She said she tried to stop Tarun by telling him she was of his daughter’s age, but he allegedly `penetrated’ her with his fingertips.
The case is still under trial.
3: ACTOR SHINY AHUJA: Married Bollywood actor Shiny Ahuja, who had made his Bollywood debut with a bang by winning the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award in 2003 for his film Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, was accused by his 20-year-old maid of rape.
Ahuja first said it was consensual sex, but later admitted to the crime. Even as the maid later retracted her statement, Ahuja was convicted for seven years on circumstantial evidence in 2011.
4: SINGER ANKIT TIWARI: In May 2014, Ashiqui 2 singer Ankit Tiwari was arrested for allegedly raping a friend for a period of over a year on the pretext of marriage. The 28-year-od woman alleged that Ankit and his brother came to her sister’s place in Versova where she was staying and Ankit raped her.
Ankit, who became famous after he sang Sunn Raha Hai Na Tu in the film Ashiqui 2, admitted after his arrest, “I was in a relationship with her for one year and I had got her to meet my parents. But when we found that she had a kid, my parents did not want me to continue with the relationship. All the charges by the woman are false and baseless.”
Mid-Day had reported at the time of his arrest, “The 28-year old victim is not from the film industry. She had come to Mumbai on a holiday and was staying with her sister who lives in Versova. The singer-musician met her through a common friend and the two were in touch with each other. The two brothers used to visit the house frequently.”
The victim complained that Ankit raped her between October 2012 and December 2013 by assuring her that he will marry her.
5: RAJENDRA PACHAURI: Nobel laureate and celebrated environmentalist Rajendra Pachauri, who passed away in February 2020, was found guilty of sexualy harassing a woman employee in his Delhi office in 2015.
The 29-year-old woman employee alleged that she received unwanted emails and text and phone messages from Pachauri who headed the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was forced to resign. Under Pachauri, the IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former US Vice-President Al Gore.
