TORONTO: The victims of the 1985 Air India bombing were remembered in a virtual ceremony in Cork in Ireland on Wednesday.
The Air India Kanishka Boeing 747 was blown off mid-air about 160 km from the Irish coast by a bomb planted by Vancouver-based Khalistani Sikhs, killing all 329 passengers and crew on board Flight 182 from Montreal to New Delhi.
Wreaths were laid at the Air India memorial garden in Ahakista to remember the victims.
Cork County Mayor Cllr Mary Linehan Foley, Canadian ambassador Nancy Smyth, and Indian ambassador Sandeep Kumar joined in the online commemoration which was also attended by Dr Padmini Turlapati who lost her two sons Sanjay and Deepak Turlapati in the tragedy.
Cork Mayor Linehan Foley said, “The devastating event that took place off the West Cork Coast brought tragedy to the lives of many families and brought the nations of Ireland, India and Canada together in mourning.”
Students of Rusnacahara National School participated in a musical recital for the victims.
