HALIFAX: A 21-year-old man has been jailed for nine years for stabbing to death Indian student Prabhjot Singh Katri in Truro town in Nova Scotia in September 2021.

The 23-year-old Katri came to Canada as a student in 2017. He was stabbed in the neck by Cameron James Prosper of Pictou Landing First Nation as he was leaving a friend’s apartment on the night of September 5, 2021.

The accused, who faced second-degree murder charge, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter during the trial.

Sentencing Cameron James Prosper on Friday, Justice Jeffrey Hunt said the attack was “made without rational cause.”

The judge said, “The family of the deceased has been devastated by his senseless death.”

Katri, who was the only son of his family in Punjab, worked at the local cab service Layton’s Tax.
