TORONTO: The Wynne Liberals have slammed PC leader Doug Ford for the nomination of `anti-Muslim’ Tanya Granic Allen as the Conservative candidate from Mississauga Centre.

Granic Allen was one of the four contestants in the PC leadership which Doug Ford won in March. She was the only defeated candidate who stood beside Doug Ford when he delivered his victory speech.

The Ontario ruling party has condemned her nomination, citing her past statements to prove that Granic Allen is racist.

In a statement, the Liberals have highlighted Granic Allen’s statements that  “I don’t believe that people should dress like bank robbers when going to vote” and “What I do take issue with is the niqab and burka because they are masks which cover the face. I don’t believe people should dress like ninjas” and urged Doug Ford to either withdraw her nomination or embrace “her bigotry”.

But Ford congratulated Granic Allen nomination from Mississauga Centre on April 21, saying that together they will defeat Kathleen Wynne and bring change to Ontario.

Granic Allen defeated three candidates – Natalia Kusendova, Qadeer Shah and Rosemer Enverga – to clinch nomination from the newly created riding.

PC party spokesperson Melanie Paradis said Granic Allen’s comments were made “some time ago, and prior to this individual being a candidate.” She said her Granic Allen’s views “do not reflect what we stand for.”

In a tweet, Granic Allen thanked her supporters for her nomination.
