The lastest Modi-Trudeau talks by phone are the first since their last meeting in New Delhi in February 2018
TORONTO: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today spoke on the phone to discuss the Corona crisis and collaboration on health issues.
About the focus of the Modi-Trudeau talks, statements by the offices of the two Prime Minister said the two leaders updated each other about the evolving situation related to the pandemic in their countries, and discussed the possibilities of international collaboration to address the health and economic crisis.
The two leaders “agreed that the India-Canada partnership can be a force for good in the post-COVID world, including for advancing humanitarian values in the global discourse.”
Modi and Trudeau “emphasized the need to strengthen multilateral institutions, including the WHO, and agreed to work closely together at various international fora, on health, social, economic and political issues.”
The two leaders highlighted the need for global coordination, including through the G20, on pandemic response and to stabilize the global economy. They spoke of the vital need to keep supply chains open for medical equipment and other critical supplies, as well as the need for increased international cooperation to accelerate the development of diagnostics, treatments, and potential vaccines.
Prime Minister Modi thanked Trudeau for the assistance extended in recent days to the Indian citizens stuck in Canada because of the Corona lockdown and facilitating their repatriation to India. “Prime Minister Trudeau similarly expressed his happiness at the facilitation offered for the return of Canadian citizens from India.”
The statement said the two leaders agreed to continue their mutual consultations in the coming days. “They agreed that as large economies wedded to democratic values, India and Canada have a natural convergence on many global issues.”
The last time the Indian and Canadian Prime Ministers met was in February 2018 when Trudeau visited India.
