Brampton desi CRA scam: York Regional Police recover $10,000 taken from an 80-year-old woman and arrest Taranveer Singh, 19, Ranveer Singh, 19, and Chamanjyot Singh, 21, all of Brampton

BRAMPTON: Three young Punjabi men from Brampton have been arrested for trying to cheat an old woman of $10,000 in the name of the Canada Revenue Agency.
Taranveer Singh, 19, Ranveer Singh, 19, Chamanjyot Singh, 21, are in custody of York Regional Police in the latest desi fraud in the name of the CRA.
According to York Regional Police, the 80-year-old woman victim received a call on May 3 from a suspect claiming to be from the CRA.
The suspect told the woman to withdraw $10,000 in two $5,000 instalments from her bank account and then send the money by courier to a Brampton address. She was told that if she didn’t pay, she would be arrested.
On May 4, police investigators intercepted the package and monitored the delivery location in Brampton, where it was scheduled to be picked up by the suspect. At about1.20 pm, the suspect arrived to pick up the package and he was taken into custody.
When he was questioned, he told the names of his two associates also involved in the crime. They were both arrested. Police recovered the victim’s money from them and returned it to her.
The suspects have been identified as Taranveer Singh, 19, Ranveer Singh, 19, and Chamanjyot Singh, 21, all of Brampton.
They have been charged with extortion, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
They will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Thursday, June 10.
