BRAMPTON: Sergeant Badal Kaushal, a 19-year veteran of the Peel Regional Police, was arrested on Friday – November 16 — and charged with three counts of assault and one count of assault with a weapon.
His arrest follows a seven-month-long investigation by the Peel Regional Police Professional Standards Bureau.
A Peel Regional Police press statement said that when the force learned of the allegations against Badal Kaushal in March 2018, it immediately began an internal investigation into the officer’s conduct.
The investigation related to an on-duty incident that occurred on May 21, 2017, in Brampton in which two victims — a 44-year-old woman and a 33-year-old woman —sustained minor injuries.
Sergeant Badal Kaushal was further charged with assault in relation to an on-duty incident that occurred on July 23, 2017, in which a 53-year-old man sustained minor injuries.
Sergeant Kaushal was released on the promise to appear on December 17 in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
He has been suspended with pay as per the provisions of the Police Services Act.
Peel Police chief Chief Jennifer Evans said, “Our officers are held to a high standard in order to maintain the trust that we have worked so hard to build within our community. Upon learning of the allegations, I immediately ordered an internal investigation into the conduct and actions of the involved officer.”
