CHANDIGARH: Indian authorities barred famous Punjabi actor-singer Gippy Grewal from entering Pakistan through Wagah border on Friday.
No one knows the reasons behind it. He was going to Pakistan with six-seven people when he was stopped from entering Pakistan at the Attari check-post.
Gippy is very popular in Pakistan as his films such as `Carry On Jutta’ and `Lucky Di Unlucky Story’ have done very well in that country.
He was going on a two-day visit to Pakistan where he had scheduled many meetings with people from the film industry for joint ventures.
A report in Pakistan’s daily Dawn said the Pakistani Evacuee Propriety Trust Board had had made arrangements to receive Gippy at the Wagah border.
An official of the Evacuee Propriety Trust Board of Pakistan told Dawn, “He (Gippy) was to move to Kartarpur (Narowal) at 9:30am and return to Lahore by 3:30pm. Later, Gippy was scheduled to attend a reception at Governor House in Lahore. Gippy was also to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Lahore and then he had meetings at the Governor House. The next day he was supposed to leave for Nankana Sahib to pay respects at Guru Nanak’s birthplace.”
Gippy had last visited Pakistan in Janaury 2020 when he went to Kartarpur and other places where people received him warmly. In an interview with Dawn during the last visit he had expressed desire to work with famous Pakistan actress Mehwish Hayat.
“I watched Punjab Nahi Jaungi and I liked her quality performance so I would definitely like to work with her in Pakistan,” he had said in the interview.
Mehwish Hayat had responded, saying, “Welcome to Pakistan Gippy Grewal. Thank you for your words of appreciation. Glad that you are enjoying our films and hospitality. Let’s get you a Pakistani flick soon.”
Pakistani comedian Iftikhar Thakur said artistes always bridge up between nations. “It is so sad that Grewal was stopped like this from entering Pakistan,” Dawn quoted him as saying.
