Maradona’s rare watch, stolen from Dubai, recovered in India

NEWD DELHI: An Indian security guard has been arrested for stealing Diego Maradona’s fabled Hublot watch.

The security guard whose name is Wajid Hussain, 37, who belongs to Sibsagar in Assam, has been arrested and the watch recovered from him.

Hussain stole the watch from a Dubai premise which the legendary footballer used to visit. Hussain worked as a security guard at that premise. The watch was stolen along with other items from a safe containing belongings of Maradona.

Worth over Rs 20 lakh ($26,500), This limit-edition watch is one of just 250 released during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The website watch-id.com described the watch as the “Hublot Maradona Big Bang Chronograph” which is 44.5 mm in diameter, and is composed of black ceramic, microblasted for texture. 

It has a sapphire crystal covered in a black dial face, adorned with Argentine blue and white in luminescent on numerals. Maradona’s jersey number, 10 in Mexcellent font is inscribed on a sub-dial around the 3 o’clock position, while an etched version of his signature is on the dial’s 6 o’clock position.

The watch also features Hublot’s HUB1146 chronograph movement with 55 jewels and 42 hours power reserve. The black ceramic case back has an image of Maradona with his arms up in victory. A luxurious alligator band reinforced with rubber back and Argentine blue stitching further accentuate the timepiece.

Hussain retuned to India from Dubai just three days ago.

The Assam Police were tipped off about Hussain by a Central agency after Dubai Police contacted their Indian counterparts.

According to Assam Police chief Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, “As informed through Central Agency by Dubai Police, one Wazid Hussain had stolen a limited edition Maradona signed Hublot watch and fled to Assam. Today morning (Saturday) at 4:00 AM we arrested Wazid from his residence in Sibsagar. The limited-edition olive watch has been recovered from him.”

Assam Chief Minister Hamanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “In an act of international cooperation, Assam police has coordinated with Dubai Police HQs through Indian federal LEA to recover a heritage Hublot watch belonging to legendary footballer Late Diego Maradona and arrested one Wazid Hussein. Follow-up lawful action is being taken”.
