BRAMPTON: Peel Police are investigating after a business below the Brampton Khalsa Montessori School at 5 Cherrycrest Dr. has been targeted with hateful graffiti.
A ground-floor business under the school found its front sprayed with hateful messages targeting the Sikh community.
A media outlet called Baaz News tweeted to show the hateful graffiti spray-painted in grey.
The multi-faith school that teaches children from the age of 18 months to Grade 8, has reportedly 50 students from Hindu, Tamil and Punjabi communities on its rolls.
Peel Police are investigating the matter even though school principal Harpreet Singh has reportedly said that the school was not targeted.
“We’re aware of a hate-motivated incident near Ebenezer Rd/Don Minaker Dr, #Brampton. Officers are currently investigating this incident, and we are urging anyone with any information on this incident to contact 905-453-2121, ext. 2133 or provide info through @PeelCrimeStopp,” said a Peel Police tweet.
Regional councillor Gurpreet Singh Dhillon also tweeted pictures of a car painted with the Swastika sign. “Is this graffiti related to the Khalsa School incident? It occurred around the same time, less than a kilometre away up the same road. We have sent this over to the PeelPolice,” he tweeted.
In a tweet, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said, “We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Sikh community in Brampton in the face of this racism.”
Vaughan-Woodbridge MP Francesco Sorbara also tweeted, “There is no place in our society for this or any type of hate. Those responsible for these actions should know that their actions only make our society stronger.”
A woman, whose kids study at the school, tweeted her outrage at the incident. “This is my kids’ school. And yes they walked past it this morning. We grew up in Toronto with this kind of hate…I truly hoped my kids would never have to experience it. My heart is broken.”
