TORNTO: Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, on Tuesday announced changes to Canada’s super visa program, under which parents and grandparents coming to Canada can now stay here up to five years per entry.

The changes will kick in from July 4.

Super visa Canada holders also have the option to request to extend their stay by up to 2 years at a time while in this country.

The changes also allow the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship to designate international medical insurance companies to provide coverage to super visa applicants.

Currently, only Canadian insurance providers can provide medical coverage to super visa holders.

The super visa program, started in 2011, allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents to live in Canada for extended periods of time. This multiple-entry visa, which is valid for up to 10 years, has allowed parents and grandparents to remain in Canada for two years at a time.
