Toronto: The two visiting Indian grandparents, who were killed earlier this week along with their three-month-old grandson in a highway crash near here during a police chase of a liquor store robber, have been identified as Manivannan, 60, and Mahalakshmi, 55.
Identifying the victims on Friday, the Indian Consulate in Toronto said, “Heartfelt condolences on the tragic loss of Indian nationals Mr. Manivannan, Mrs. Mahalakshmi & their grandchild in the Highway 401 collision.”
Indian Consul General Siddhartha Nath met the bereaved family in hospital and assured all possible assistance from the Indian government.
“We are in touch with Canadian authorities,” the Indian Consulate said.
The crash happened when police chased a liquor store robber driving up the wrong side of Canada’s busiest 401 Highway near Whitby, about 50 kilometres east of Toronto, on Monday night.
The robber also died in the crash.
Manivannan and Mahalakshmi were visiting their son and daughter-in-law in Ajax near Toronto.
The parents of the three-month-old infant, who were also travelling the family’s Nissan Sentra car, survived with serious injuries.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, which is investigating the crash, said, “In this same vehicle were the parents of the infant – the 33-year-old father and 27-year-old mother. The parents, residents of Ajax, were both taken to hospital for treatment. The mother was treated for serious injuries that she suffered.”
