In a tragic case, a depressed Indian cut off tongue to offer to the local deity to stop the spread of coronavirus
A 24-year-old Indian cut off his tongue to appease a deity to stop the spread of coronavirus on Saturday.
Vivek Sharma, the 24-year-old migrant worker from Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, cut off his tongue as an offering at a temple in Nadeshwari village of Suigam sub-division in Banaskantha district of Gujarat.
“We found him holding his chopped tongue in his hand and rushed him to Suigam hospital,” India Today quoted police sub-inspector HD Parmar as saying.
Why did this Indian cut off tongue?
Like millions of Indian migrant workers stuck in different parts of the country because of the nationwide lockdown to check the spread of coronavirus, Sharma was reportedly depressed and wanted to return home.
“For the last few days, he was keen to go back to his native town in Madhya Pradesh. But it was impossible due to lockdown. Today, in reckless abandon he copped off his tongue,’’ the police sub-inspector was quoted as saying.
Sharma and his brother were working as stone sculptors at another temple – Bhavani Mata shrine – which is 14 km away from the incident site. He reportedly left the work site on Saturday to go to the market but failed to return. When his brother called his mobile phone, someone told him that Sharma had chopped off his tongue at the temple.
It is not known whether doctors have succeeded in reattaching his tongue.
