Brampton Sikh Palwinder Singh shot dead in gun violence

BRAMPTON: Palwinder Singh, 28, of Brampton has been identified as the victim of the 11th murder in the city this year.

Known as Palli Goraya, he was shot dead at a residence on Donwoods Court in the area of Countryside Drive and Airport Road at about 6.11 pm on Monday. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The motive behind the murder is not known, though it is speculated by his friends that robbery could be one of the factors behind the killing. The victim had celebrated his 28th birthday just two days before his murder.

A truck driver, he had immigrated to Canada from India in 2010. His family lives in Rama Mandi in Punjab. His father Gurmez Singh is a retired Assistant Sub-Inspector from Punjab Police.

The victim was planning to visit his family in India in November. His only sister – Jaswinder Kaur – lives in Vancouver.

Sean Ponto, 18, and Andrew Edward, 19, both of Mississauga, have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the case.

However, two male suspects remain at large. The first is described as of medium complexion, in early 20s, short black curly hair, black beard, approximately 5’8”,  150 lbs., wearing a light blue hoodie, blue jeans and white shoes.

The second is described as male black, dark complexion, clean shaven approximately 5’6”, 160 lbs., wearing a black hoodie, black bandana and sunglasses.

It is the 11th murder in Brampton and the 16th in Peel Region in 2018.

Brampton, which is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, is home to the second largest concentration of the Indo-Canadian community in the country after Surrey in British Columbia.

In fact, Sikhs make up about 20 percent of Brampton’s population of about 600,000.
