TORONTO: In a big embarrassment for the Indo-Canadian community, Ajai Singh, son of former Akal Takht jathedar Giani Puran Singh,  was on Thursday jailed for 90 days by a court in the city of Abbotsford near Vancouver for sexual assault on a 13-year-old girl.

Ajai Singh,  38, who was visiting Canada with his ragi jatha, was arrested on February 9  and charged with sexual misconduct with the minor girl.

After serving his jail sentence, Ajai Singh will be on probation for 18 months. But the probation period has no meaning as Ajai Singh will be deported to India immediately after his sentence period is over. He won’t be eligible to enter Canada ever again.

Ajai Singh, who was employed as a hymn singer (ragi) by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), was suspended from his job following his arrest.

Ajai Singh was reportedly staying with a family at the time of his shameful misconduct.

Abbotsford, not far from Vancouver, is home to a huge Punjabi Sikh community.
