BRAMPTON: Brampton’s Kulwant Singh, whose works are making a mark on the local art scene, became one of the over 250 artists to showcase their works at the prestigious Artist Project Toronto in April.

In all, he put 27 of his works on display, drawing people and queries from diverse backgrounds and sources.

In a community where artistic pursuits are rarely valued, this man deserves kudos for inspiring the new generation of Indo-Canadians to take up art as a full-time profession.

Kulwant Singh spoke to Canadian Bazaar.

Q: How was the response to your work at Artist Project Toronto? How was your experience?

It’s always a pleasure to meet fellow artists and see their work, as well as interact with art enthusiasts. Every year, artists present incredibly creative work, and I was inspired throughout the four-day show! This year’s event was especially well-attended, with booths packed shoulder to shoulder at times.

Q: What kind of people came and made queries about your work? How many works did you display there? Which one was the best?

This year I showcased a total of twenty-seven pieces, all of which were appreciated for different reasons. Some liked the lighting in certain pieces, some liked the expressions, and others enjoyed the technicalities of my work. The audience overall was quite diverse, in terms of professions, nationalities, and ages.

Q: Were there any other Indian artists at the show?

There were about seven or eight artists of Indian descent among the over two hundred fifty artists exhibiting their work at the show; these artists created paintings, sculptures, drawings, and mixed-media pieces. It’s always encouraging to see that, when compared to previous years, the representation of South Asians appears to be increasing annually.

Q: Who is invited to display their works at this show?

To my knowledge, this show is open to any contemporary, independent artist seeking a broad professional platform to showcase and sell their work in one of Canada’s largest cities. The Artist Project team also reaches out to art buyers, curators, and collectors, making it an ideal show to work with.

Q: Have you participated in it in the past?

This year was the second time I showcased my work at the Artist Project, so it was a delight to see familiar faces again.

Q: Your daughter is following in your footsteps. Tell a little about her.

My daughter is following in my footsteps to become a professional artist as she’s currently pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting at the Ontario College of Art and Design University. It’s very exciting to see her progress with her work, and I can’t wait to see where she goes with it.

Q: What is the next big thing coming up from you?

I’m very excited to announce that I’ll be exhibiting at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair once again this year, in July! The show will run from July 12 to 14, and I’m looking forward to seeing some of the most brilliant works.
