Under Oxford-educated Prime Minister Imran Khan, who took pride in being the playboy of international cricket during his playing days, romanced beautiful society women and fathered a baby out of wedlock with American socialite Sita White, in the Pakistan’s regression into middle-ages mindset continues.
The country has banned “hugs, caress scenes, extramarital relations, vulgar or bold dressing, bed scenes and intimacy of married couple” in dramas shown on television.
In its order to TV channels, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has said intimate scenes in dramas are being `glamourised’ in “utter disregard to Islamic teachings and culture of Pakistani society”.
And everyone knows the slide of Pakistan from an open, liberal society in the 1960s into a country of fanatics and jihadis.
Hitting out at the ban, legal and human rights professional Reema Omer said, “PEMRA finally got something right: Intimacy and affection between married couples isn’t ‘true depiction of Pakistani society’ and must not be ‘glamourised’.”
Reema added, “Our ‘culture’ is control, abuse and violence, which we must jealously guard against the imposition of such alien values.”
