NEW DELHI: Residents of Samaipur Badli in outer Delhi had the scare of their life on Sept 18 when they found a 30-year-old man whom they had cremated four weeks ago walking back into the village.

The scared residents subjected the man – named Dharam Singh – to questioning for about an hour to ensure that he was not the ghost of the man they had cremated.

In this bizarre incident, some people of the Samaipur Badli area had beaten to death a thief whom they had caught red-handed on Aug 27. The thief had similar features and body marks as Dharam Singh – a scar on the leg and a missing finger.

After the identification of the body, Dharam Singh’s family claimed his body thinking that it was he had been beaten to death. They cremated the body.

But four weeks later, the villagers were shocked and scared shit when they saw Dharam Singh walking back into the village. They thought it was the ghost of Dharam Singh even as the man (Dharam Singh) tried to convince that he was not the ghost, but real Dharam Singh. He had a tough time convincing the villagers that he was not lynched by the mob. He said he had left home after a fight with his family members and gone to work on a truck. He said he has now returned after earning some money.

Finally, the residents accepted him as real Dharam Singh, not his ghost. The family of Dharam Singh realized their mistake that they had claimed someone else’s body as that of Dharam Singh and cremated it.
