NEW DELHI: The 43-year-old woman journalist, whose pictures with Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, 67, recently went viral social media forcing both of them admit their secret relationship, has filed an FIR alleging that someone hacked her email account and stole her private pictures.
Amrita Rai, who is an anchor with Rajya Sabha TV, has said in her complaint to the police that stealing her private pictures by hacking her account has outraged her modesty and caused her harassment. She has also alleged that a fake Twitter account has been opened in her name and she is getting abusive tweets.
The leakage of their intimate pictures forced Digvijaya Singh on Wednesday to admit that he indeed is in a relationship with Amrita Rai.
“I have no hesitation in accepting my relationship with Amrita Rai. She and her husband have already filed a mutual consent divorce case. Once that is decided we would formalise it. But I do condemn encroachment in our private life,’’ the Congress leader tweeted.
Digvijay Singh’s wife Asha Singh, 58, died of cancer in February 27 last year.
Amrita Rai is separated from her husband, and has filed for divorce.
Amrita also tweeted, “I have separated from my husband and we have filed a mutual consent divorce papers. After which I have decided to marry with Digvijaya Singh.’’
There are rumours that she got the job in the government-funded channel thanks to her secret relationship with Digvijaya Singh.
As Digvijaya Singh’s affair with his wife became public, Amrita’s husband Anand Pradhan, who is an associate professor at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in New Delhi, said on his facebook page,“ Amrita is free to take decisions about her future and I respect them. I also wish her the best for her future life.’’
The estranged husband said, “I am going through difficult and testing times. Amrita and I have lived separate lives for a long time. We have applied for divorce with mutual consent. It is a legal procedure which takes its own time. But the relationship we once had ended long ago.’’
Requesting people to respect his privacy, he said, “I know many of my friends, well-wishers, students and colleagues are feeling sorry for me. But more than that, I also know they are with me. I am sure I will come out of these difficult times. I expect you all to respect my privacy. One gets to recognise one’s friends on such occasions.â€
Pradhan added, “For people who are not ready to view the finer details of man-woman relationship and also the woman’s existence and personality from any other mindset than the feudal and patriarchal one, for those who do not consider women anything more than a private property or a baby-making machine, for those who do not respect the dignity of that gender, it is a chance to indulge in lurid jokes, personal attacks and mudslinging. But this is all they know. This is the limit of their thinking and politics. I do not expect anything more than this from them.’’
