NEW YORK: The United Nations on December 11 declared June 21 as International Yoga day.
Introduced by India and co-sponsored by 175 other nations, the resolution on International Yoga Day was adopted unanimously by the 193-member UN general assembly.
The adoption of International Yoga Day comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his UN speech in September stressed the need for a world yoga day for holistic approach to health and well-being.
Modi had also proposed June 21 as International Yoga because it is a significant day as it is the longest day of the year in Northern Hemisphere.
International Yoga day joins other 118 awareness-raising days observed by the UN.
