Is Rohit Sharma the best batsman in the world today? Well, Indian captain Virat Kohli is terrific in one-day ODIs and Test cricket, with a record average of over 50 runs in both formats of the game.
Australian captain Steve Smith is the best batsman in Test cricket.
West Indian Chris Gayle is the king of T20 cricket.
South African AB de Villiers is the most ruthless batsman.
But if you look at his recent figures, Indian batsman Rohit Sharma is right up there with all these four batsmen.
In fact, Sharma has done what none of these four batsmen have done. He has scored three double hundreds in ODIs. And he is the master of hitting sixes.
So isn’t Rohit Sharma the best batsman today?
Former cricket prodigy Vinod Kambli says Rohit could be the first to hit a triple century in limited overs one-day internationals (ODIs).
Reacting to Rohit’s 208 not out against Sri Lanka in Mohali ODI on December 13, Kambli tweeted, “@ImRo45 .slaughter,slaughter,slaughter.Three double hundreds an Amazing achievement. I am sure in the near future he will be the first one to get 300 agree or disagree.’’
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly says Rohit is as great a batsman as Indian captain Virat Kohli.
“This year, he’s scored as many hundreds as Virat Kohli. We keep talking about Virat Kohli and how great he is in one-day cricket but look at Rohit. He is no way behind, 11 hundreds in 50-odd innings (since 2015),” Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by India Today.
“I have always said that he’s a terrific batsman and a match-winner. Hopefully, he can transform his renewed hunger for runs, his renewed ability to convert hundreds into double hundreds in the next 10 months. The shots he played was absolutely breathtaking.’’
Clearly, Rohit Sharma is one of the best batsmen, if not the best batsman in the world today.
