India will have the world’s largest Muslim population by 2050

NEW YORK: Muslims are the fastest-growing major religious group and Islam is set to become the world’s biggest religion by 2070, according to a study by Washington-based non-profit Pew Research Center.

Thanks to their highest fertility rate and the youngest population, the Muslim population of the world is expected to increase from 1.6 billion people to 2.76 billion people by 2050, accounting for 30 percent of all people.

In 2050, Muslims will nearly equal Christians –which is the world’s largest religious group today.

Interestingly, by 2050 India will have the world’s largest number of Muslims, leaving behind Indonesia. By 2050, India Muslims will number over 310 million. At that time, Hindus will make up about 77 percent of India’s population.

Pakistan will be the second country with the second largest Muslim population by 2050.

By 2050, the Christian population of America will decline from the current levels of more than 75 percent to 66 percent in 2050.

Buddhists, who number at under 500 million and account for 7 percent of the world’s population will decline to 5 per cent by 2050.
