CHANDIGARH: Punjab has banned the teaching of three books in state school for allegedly containing derogatory references to Sikh gurus and personalities.

The banned books are ‘Modern ABC of History of Punjab’ by Manjit Singh Sodhi, a history book by Mahinder Pal Kaur and ‘History of Punjab’ by M S Mann.

The Dr Kirpal Singh Committee, which was formed in 2017 to look into the allegedly derogatory references to Sikh gurus and personalities, had recommended the replacement of these books from Punjab school curricula.

But no action was taken to ban these books from the state’s schools.

Punjab Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer said, “Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has ordered action against its writers and publishers besides banning the book.”

Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) chairman Yograj Singh confirmed that the three books have been banned for sale and would not be taught in schools. He said the government had asked for suggestions to start follow-up action against the officials who allowed these lapses.

“The orders of the state government have been conveyed to SCERT director and all district education officers for compliance with immediate effect,” the state education board said.

The PSEB added that four other books, including ‘History of Punjab’ by AC Arora of Pardeep Publication, are under the scanner. “As and when the inquiry report is received, it will be examined and a decision will be taken accordingly,” PSEB said.
