TORONTO: In what has been described as the biggest-ever haul of cocaine in Alberta, a Punjabi truck driver and a woman passenger from California have been arrested for trying to smuggle almost 100 kg of cocaine into Canada.
Gurminder Singh Toor, 31, and Kirandeep Kaur Toor, 26, from California were arrested on the US-Alberta border just after midnight on December 2 when the two were trying to smuggle 99.5 kg cocaine in a semi-trailer.
The value of cocaine is estimated to be $8 million.
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers at Coutts intercepted the commercial vehicle that was supposed to be hauling produce from California for an Alberta business.
But when CBSA officers inspected the cab of the vehicle, they found 84 bricks of cocaine weighing 99.5 kilograms, a press release by the CBSA said.
The truck driver and the woman were arrested and handed over to the RCMP.
They have been charged with four counts each under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
The greedy mentality to become rich quickly among a section of the Indo-Canadians has led to many such arrests in recent years, tarnishing the reputation of the whole Indo-Canadian community.
