A known Sikh leader of Pakistan has been shot dead in a targeted shooting in Peshawar.
According to reports, 52-year-old Charan Jeet Singh, who was a known community leader and rights activist, was shot dead by a lone gunman when he was on his way home from his shop in the Scheme Chowk area of Peshawar on Tuesday.
Singh died on the spot and the lone attacker fled the scene. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.
Peshawar police chief Qazi Jamilur Rehman has constituted an investigation committee, headed by SSP Investigation Nisar Khan, to investigate the murder of the Sikh leader who was known for his work for interfaith harmony, according to Daily Times.
The victim, whose family originally comes from Kurram Agency, had migrated to Peshawar in the early 1980s. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.
Peshawar Cantonment superintendent of police said, “The lone attacker managed to escape the scene after killing Charan Jeet Singh inside his shop. Investigations have been initiated after the case was logged at Inqilab Police Station.”
The Pakistani Sikh community has increasingly been targeted by the Taliban in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
