TORONTO: Punjabi truck driver Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, who was sentenced to eight years in jail for killing 16 Humboldt Broncos junior hockey players and injuring 13 by jumping red lights in 2018, faces deportation to India.

A permanent resident, he wants to be given another chance to stay in Canada.

“I just want one chance I can give back to the community and show that I’m not a bad person, bad human being — I’m just like everybody,” Sidhu says in an interview with CBC from the Bowden Institution in Innisfail in Alberta where he is serving his eight-year sentence.

Sidhu crashed his semi-trailer into a bus carrying the hockey players at an intersection near the town of Armley in Saskatchewan on April 6, 2018.

Sidhu, who came to Canada from Punjab in 2014, was sentenced to eight years for each of the 16 deaths and five years for dangerous driving in March 2019.

He had married his girlfriend Tanvir Mann, a trained nurse from India, just three months before the crash.

When the couple returned to Canada, Sidhu did just one-week training course and two weeks of supervised driving and then took the job.

Driving between the speed of 86-96 km, he didn’t heed the red-light signal, ramming his semi-trailer into the bus which was already in the intersection.

Since he is just a permanent resident not a citizen of Canada, Sidhu faces deportation to India.

Sidhu’s lawyer Michael Greene has contended that since his client has no criminal background he should not be deported.

The lawyer has said Sidhu is “clearly not the kind of guy that is going to commit another offence. So put all together, it’s going to be an extremely difficult decision for an (immigration) officer to make.”
