BRAMPTON: Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and her Cabinet and MPP colleagues celebrated Diwali with the Indo-Canadian community at the Dreams Convention Centre in Brampton last week.

The Premier lit the traditional diya or lamp along with Minister Dipika Damerla and other Indo-Canadian MPPs.

Wynne, who dresses in saree for Indian events, came to Diwali celebrations in a matching red-colour saree. Diwali stands for the victory of good over evil, she said.

The Premier said the festival of lights comes just about the right time in Canada “when it starts to get dark and cold. We need Diwali to show us light at the other end of winter.’’

Recalling the deep bonds between Ontario and India, she said when she visited India last year most of the people she met told her that they have a relative in the province.

Minister Dipika Damerla explained the significance of Diwali for the Hindus,  Sikhs and Jains.

Earlier, MPP Harinder Malhi, who represents the local Brampton-Springdale riding at Queen’s Park, welcomed the Premier, her colleagues and members of the Indo-Canadian community to the event.
