India-Canada nuclear deal: Canada India Foundation made it as its primary policy recommendation at the Canada India Energy Forum in 2009

TORONTO: The Canada India Foundation (CIF) has welcomed the recent signing of the Appropriate Arrangement pursuant to the India-Canada Nuclear Cooperation Agreement which was inked in June 2010.
Calling the India-Canada nuclear deal a significant milestone, CIF chairman Barj S. Dhahan said, “The CIF has been a consistent vocal champion of the civil nuclear agreement between Canada and India and made it the primary policy recommendation at the Canada India Energy Forum organized by it in 2009.”
He said, “It is significant that the announcement of the signing of the Appropriate Arrangement was made by Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Honourable Joe Oliver, at the headquarters of Cameco Corporation, whose then-CEO, Mr. Gerald Grandey had been a key speaker and participant at the Canada India Energy Forum.”
Rahul Shastri, National Convenor of the CIF, added, “Both Canada and India will benefit greatly when the Nuclear Cooperation Agreement is finally in force, with greater assurance of energy security for India and jobs for Canadians, generated through Canadian technology.
“The nuclear cooperation potential was a key reason behind CIF’s recommendation of a rethinking of the bilateral trade target for Canada and India to a figure greater than $15 billion, as stated in its submission to the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade in November 2012.”
A non-profit, the CIF works for promoting relations between Canada and India, educating Canadians on the changing face of India, and increasing the participation of Indo-Canadians in the public policy process in Canada.
