TORONTO: Priya Madaan, an 18-year-old Indo-Canadian from Windsor, has been crowned as Miss Canada 2014.

Madaan, who is a first-year nursing student at the University of Windsor, beat out 18 finalists win the crown at the Miss Canada 2014 pageant in Montreal on Saturday.

“I was so surprised when my name was called and they crowned me. It’s still such a shock to me. I can’t believe I’m Miss Canada,’’ the beauty queen told her native city newspaper the Windsor Star.

She said, “It’s the best feeling in the world knowing that I was chosen to represent all of Canada. This competition was the most amazing thing I’ve experienced in my life.’’

Madaan, who was a runner-up at the local Miss Via Italia pageant last year, said, “To me, being Miss Canada means being a positive role model to the younger generation and showing them that their dreams can come true if they work for them.

“The crown will help me raise awareness for this cause that I’m passionate about and hopefully others will be passionate about it, too.’’

Miss Canada Priya Madaan, who has been volunteering for the Canadian World Education Foundation, UNICEF India and the Heart and Stroke Foundation, said she now intends to raise awareness about underprivileged young people and help raise funds for their education.
