Do you know how many nuclear weapons are there in the world today?
There are 14,200 bombs in the nuclear stockpile of the world, says a National Interest report.
Russia with 6,600 active and retired weapons leads the world in nuclear weapons today. America has about 4,000 nuclear weapons or 3,822 to be precise.
Other nuclear powers China, Britain, France, Pakistan, India, Israel and North Korea all together have over one thousand nuclear weapons.
At its peak, the American nuclear weapons numbered 31,255 in 1967 after the Cuban missile crisis, says the report.
The US has been dismantling its nuclear weapons since the 1970s when its stock declined to 24,000-28,000 weapons. The dismantling picked up after the end of the Cold War with the disintegration of the then USSR in 1991. By 1999, the US had 10,685 nuclear weapons.
The report quotes the Federation of American Scientists to put the actual number of American nuclear weapons as of January 2017 at about 6,800. But only about 4,000 are active.
According to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ican), both America and Russia have 1,800 of their nuclear ready to be fired at a quick notice.
Compared to the two bombs dropped on Hiroshima (90,00-166,000 killed) and Nagasaki (39,000-80,000 killed) during the Second World War, today’s bombs are up to 3,000 more powerful and can kill billions of people.
