TORONTO: A 27-year-old Indo-Canadian security guard from Hamilton has been arrested for sexually assaulting a woman during a quarantine check in Oakville.

The accused, who has been identified as Hemant from Hamilton, has been charged with multiple offences, including sexual assault, by the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS).

Police say Hemant went to an Oakville residence on February 18 to conduct a quarantine compliance check on a woman. He told the victim that she was in violation of the quarantine order and demanded her to pay him a fine in cash. When the victim refused to pay, he sexually assaulted her.

Police nabbed Hemant on February 23. He will appear in court in Milton on March 23. His company has suspended him.

Hemant has been trained by the Public Health Agency of Canada to be a designated screening officer. His job is to go to quarantine locations to identify and confirm that travellers are at the place of quarantine they identified upon entry into Canada, and that they are complying with the mandatory 14-day quarantine.

As yet another quarantine sexual assault on a woman in a hotel quarantine in Dorsal in Quebec, the opposition Conservative Party has asked the Liberal government to suspend the mandatory quarantine policy.

“We are deeply angered to hear reports of sexual violence are happening during federally mandated quarantines. The Liberal government must take action now…to suspend the hotel quarantine requirement until they have put measures in place to ensure the safety of Canadians,” a statement by Conservative MPs said.
