BRAMPTON: In a worrisome devlopment, Ontario on Sunday reported more than 1,000 new Covid cases in a single day since the outbreak of the pandemic in March.
On Sunday, as many as 1,042 new cases of infections were reported across Ontario. Seven people also died of the virus on Sunday.
On Saturday, Ontario had reported a new new high of 978 cases, shattered by the Sunday numbers.
Toronto reported 309 new cases, Peel region 289 and York region 117.
Deputy Premier and health minister Christine Elliott tweeted on Sunday, “Ontario is reporting 1,042 cases of #COVID19 with nearly 38,800 tests completed. Locally, there are 309 new cases in Toronto, 289 in Peel, 117 in York Region, 80 in Ottawa and 52 in Durham. There are 736 more resolved cases.”
The spike in Covid cases early this month – considered the second wave of the pandemic – forced the Ontario government to put Toronto, Peel and York regions back in a modified form of Stage 2 under which indoor dining, gyms and theatres have been closed for four weeks.
Till date, Ontario has reported 70,373 cases of Covid. As many as 3,092 people have so far died from the virus, with long-term care homes alone accounting for 1989 deaths.
